Current work in aquaculture predominantly involves manual labour, performed by expert divers who face the inherent risks of the marine environment. The ARTEMISA project is designed to enhance this process by developing a methodology that supports remote control of sensors, aerators, and a team of underwater intervention robots. This is achieved through the integration of aerial and underwater wireless communications technology, artificial intelligence, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and biological studies specific to aquaculture. The project encompasses several key tasks: external net inspection and repair, internal assessment of water, fish, and nets via a wireless, fish-shaped robot, and the targeted aeration of cage areas based on water oxygenation levels. The system incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) for robot navigation and utilizes advanced numerical methods for real-time simulation of currents, optimizing trajectory calculations and interventions in cage aeration systems. A critical aspect of the project is the welfare of fish, focusing on understanding and mitigating stress during robot operations within the cages.
The system’s continuous improvement will be informed by experiments with real fish, aiming to enhance mimicry and animal welfare. The motivation of ARTEMISA is to drive a technological leap in the field of Robotics, CFDs, AI, and Behavioural Biology, fostering the achievement of safe, fair, sustainable, and precise aquaculture. This initiative aims to address the current challenges faced by the scientific community, with a particular focus on improving and ensuring animal welfare.
