OUR STORY
On 14th, 15th and 16th March 2019, the Research Group for Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies (GREMI), a research cluster working at Universitat Jaume I of Castelló, organised the International Conference “Traductio et Traditio Mediaevales: science, knowledge and ideology” in the city of Morella, which gathered more than 50 prestigious specialists in the field affiliated with relevant research centres in Europe, America and Asia. The Conference became a great success and some of the research papers delivered were included in the volume Literature, Science & Religion. Textual Transmission and Translation in Medieval and Early Modern Europe (Kassel, Reichenberger, 2020).
The main topic of this Conference, the written culture as a tool for knowledge transfer during the medieval period, found its best way of expression in translation, but it was also open to other related artistic forms and products such as rewriting or encyclopaedic compilation. Precisely because of this reason, this scientific gathering addressed the issue of translation and the written culture from different methodologies, approaches and disciplines, thus covering a great diversity of geographic spaces, linguistic traditions, historical processes and cultural phenomena.
Before the closing of the Conference, many of the participants gave a positive appraisal of the event and, subsequently, shared this view with several members of the Organising Committee. Fuelled by this good reception, the Conference directors expressed, at the closing ceremony, the wish to hold some other similar scientific gatherings under the heading of “Traductio et Traditio Mediaevales” in order to delve into the knowledge of this field. Then and there, a group of researchers from Universitat d’Alacant decided to take up the baton and organise the 2nd edition of International Conference “Traductio et Traditio Mediaevales”.
The experience of the past Conference held at Morella has made the members of the Research Group for Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies (GREMI) consider the need to specifically promote the creation of a forum open to any scholar interested in doing research on translation and written transmission in the medieval period. One of the best instruments to accomplish this great objective is the celebration of conferences and other related events where the scientific community may exchange experiences and disseminate the results of their contributions. Our wish is to celebrate new and successive scientific gatherings under the heading of “Traductio et Traditio Mediaevales”.
