Safeguarding Rights in the Age of AI Language Services

What is TITAN?

TITAN (Translation and Interpreting Technologies and Accountability Network) is a collaborative research project that explores how AI-based translation and interpreting (ATI) systems shape our societies.
Our mission is simple but ambitious: to ensure that language technologies are used responsibly, inclusively, and ethically, protecting rights and strengthening democracy in a multilingual world.

Why TITAN Matters

AI-powered language services are now everywhere — from public administrations and hospitals to global businesses and everyday communication.
But their rapid adoption comes with risks:

  • Mistranslations that can affect health, justice, and governance.
  • Biases that reinforce inequality and discrimination.
  • Loss of linguistic and cultural diversity.
  • Weakening of democratic debate.

TITAN addresses these challenges by building awareness, producing practical guidelines, and creating a certification system to recognize accountable and ethical uses of ATI.

Our Approach

TITAN brings together experts from translation and interpreting studies, law, sociology, technology, gender studies, and public policy alongside industry and international organizations.
Together, we:

  • Study risks, biases, and rights violations in ATI.
  • Benchmark practices in public institutions, companies, and NGOs.
  • Develop literacy and training materials for safe ATI use.
  • Foster international collaboration for a global certification system.

Our Vision

A future where language services:

  • Protect rights and empower all communities.
  • Respect diversity and promote inclusion.
  • Support democracy by ensuring accurate, transparent, and accountable multilingual communication.
